Building Resilience in Jackson
In August of 2022, almost a year after ice storm hit Jackson, MS, the majority-Black city faced another water crisis. For 40 days, nearly 150,000 people were put under another boil water notice after heavy rain caused the Pearl River to flood, eventually leading to the failure of the city's main water treatment plant.
For over a year, 501CTHREE has been working with People's Advocacy Institute, the Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition, and The Solutions Project to provide clean water in Jackson, especially in the case of another emergency like this one. When the water system failed its residents once more this year, our partners were there, on the ground, distributing water to the people of Jackson.
The collaboration with the Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition has provided rapid relief to communities in crisis in Mississippi, especially in moments of crisis.“Our mission at the Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition is to listen to the needs of our community and find solutions to the problems they are facing. Collaborating with 501CTHREE to provide clean drinkable water to our community allows us to accomplish a small part of our larger goal–making our community whole,” said Rukia Lumumba, People’s Advocacy Institute’s Executive Director.
The Water Box at the Sykes Community Center in Jackson, MS was made possible through a donation by The Solutions Project. The Solutions Project is a national nonprofit organization that promotes climate justice through grantmaking and amplifying the stories of frontline community leaders in the media. The organization seeks to accelerate the transition to 100% clean energy and equitable access to healthy air, water, and soils by supporting climate justice organizations, especially those led by women of color.
